FIFA World Cup 2026: Vinicius Jr. Joins Brazilian Legends, Neymar Returns, a Teenager Breaks Mbappe's Record, The Stats That Defined June 24

25 June 2026

freegst.co Sports Desk  |  June 25, 2026  |  FIFA World Cup 2026 Group Stage Matchday 14

June 24 was one of those days at the 2026 World Cup where the numbers told a better story than any commentary could. Three group stages wrapped up Groups A, B, and C all settled their fates on the same day. Brazil steamrolled Scotland. Morocco came back from two goals down against Haiti. South Africa pulled off a genuine upset against South Korea. Mexico cruised. And somewhere in between all that, a few records quietly got rewritten.

Here is the full breakdown of what happened, and more importantly, what the stats behind it all actually mean.

BRAZIL 3 – 0 SCOTLAND  |  Group C  |  Miami

Vinicius Jr. - The Best Brazilian at a World Cup Right Now

There is an argument to be made that Vinicius Jr. is not just Brazil's best player at this tournament — he is operating on a different level than most people expected going in. Against Scotland, he scored twice and picked up where he left off in previous matches.

7/13  Goals in 13 games under Carlo Ancelotti vs just 6 goals in 39 games under all other Brazil coaches.

5th  Brazilian to score in all three group stage games joining Jairzinho (1970), Romario (1994), and both Ronaldo and Rivaldo (2002). All four of those years ended with Brazil lifting the trophy.

1st  Header goal of his entire international career scored it here, on the biggest stage.

That Ancelotti effect is real and it is showing. The numbers 7 goals in 13 games compared to 6 in 39 under everyone else are not a fluke. Something about this setup is bringing the best out of Vinicius in a Brazil shirt.

Neymar is Back and He Just Made History

He has been gone for a long time. Neymar last played for Brazil in October 2023, and between injuries and club chaos, his return to this World Cup was never guaranteed. But he came on against Scotland and he walked into the record books almost immediately.

4th  Brazilian to play in four different FIFA World Cups joining Djalma Santos, Cafu, and Pele. That list says everything.

He did not change the game. He did not need to. Just being on that pitch in a 2026 World Cup, at 34, after everything that is the story by itself.

Others Who Stepped Up

2/2  Matheus Cunha scored in both of his World Cup starts, the first Brazilian to do that since Philippe Coutinho in 2018.

1st  Bruno Guimaraes recorded multiple assists in a single World Cup game, the first Brazilian to do so since Kaka had two against Ivory Coast back in 2010.

The Bigger Brazil Picture

15  Straight World Cups Brazil has advanced from the group stage. They last failed in 1966.

9th  World Cup victory by 3+ goals this century, more than any other nation.

16th  Carlo Ancelotti became the first Italian manager to reach World Cup knockouts since Fabio Capello with England in 2010.

Brazil top Group C. Scotland's fate now hangs on third-place calculations they need results elsewhere to go their way.

MOROCCO 4 – 2 HAITI  |  Group C  |  Atlanta

Morocco's First-Ever World Cup Comeback Win

Nobody had ever come back to win a World Cup game when trailing at any point in Morocco's history. They were 0-1-11 in those situations. Haiti scored first. Then I scored again. And Morocco still won 4-2. That is new territory for them.

1st  Comeback win in Morocco's World Cup history they advance to knockouts for the third time after 1986 and 2022.

2nd  African team to overcome two deficits in a comeback win at the World Cup joining Nigeria vs Spain in 1998.

Hakimi — Finally

Achraf Hakimi is one of the best fullbacks in world football. He has 12 goals in 99 appearances for Morocco. And heading into this game, he had not scored in 13 World Cup appearances. That changed against Haiti.

21  Chances created by Hakimi in World Cup history are second among all African players since 1966, behind only Yaya Toure's 23.

He and Soufiane Rahimi both scored and assisted only the second and third Moroccan players to ever do that in a World Cup match.

Ismael Saibari — A Quiet Record

3rd  Goals in 3 group stage games for Saibari only the second African player to score in each of the first three group matches, after Senegal's Papa Bouba Diop in 2002.

20y 214d  Gessime Yassine became Morocco's youngest-ever World Cup scorer at just 20 years and 214 days old.

BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA 3 – 1 QATAR  |  Group B

The Teenager Who Beat Mbappe's Record

Kylian Mbappe scored from outside the box at the 2018 World Cup aged 19 years and 207 days. That was the record for the youngest player to do so since 1966. Kerim Alajbegovic is 18 years and 276 days old. He just took the record.

18y 276d  Kerim Alajbegovic youngest player to score from outside the box at a World Cup (since 1966), beating Mbappe who was 19y 207d in 2018.

Bosnia qualified for the knockout stages with this result their first-ever World Cup knockout appearance. Alajbegovic's long-range strike may be the goal everyone remembers from their group stage run.

Other Bosnia-Qatar Notes

10th  Own goal of the tournament so far already the second-most own goals in any single World Cup edition ever.

2nd  Qatari player to ever score at a World Cup Hassan Al-Haydos joins Mohammed Muntari (2022).

3rd  Qatar became the third team ever to score two own goals in the same World Cup, after Russia (2018) and Bulgaria (1966).

SWITZERLAND 2 – 1 CANADA  |  Group B

Switzerland's Quiet Consistency

4th  Consecutive World Cup editions where Switzerland have reached the knockout stage (2014, 2018, 2022, 2026). Only other European team to do that: France.

Johan Manzambi Explosive Tournament

6th  Swiss player to score 3+ goals in a single World Cup first since Shaqiri.

3rd  Only the third U21 player this century with 4+ goal involvements at a World Cup, after Mbappe (2018) and Thomas Muller (2010).

Canada qualified as second-place despite losing but they are the only host nation at this tournament that did not win their group.

SOUTH AFRICA 1 – 0 SOUTH KOREA  |  Group A

The Upset Nobody Saw Coming

South Africa have appeared at three previous World Cups 1998, 2002 and 2010 (which they hosted). They never made it past the group stage in any of them. That changed on June 24.

1st  Time South Africa have reached the World Cup knockout stages in their history.

11  Different players have scored South Africa's last 11 World Cup goals every goal, a different scorer.

South Korea now faces the very real possibility of elimination. Their tactical gambles backfired on a day when South Africa were simply hungrier.

MEXICO 3 – 0 CZECHIA  |  Group A

Mexico Made History in Their Own Backyard

1st  CONCACAF team to finish a World Cup group stage with 3 wins. The US could match them on Thursday.

17y 253d  Gilberto Mora youngest Mexico starter at a World Cup since at least 1954.

40y 346d  Guillermo Ochoa oldest player ever to appear for Mexico at a World Cup. He surpasses Rafa Marquez who was 39y 139d vs Brazil in 2018.

7th  Player aged 40+ to feature at the 2026 World Cup. Before this tournament, only 7 players aged 40+ had ever appeared at any World Cup in history.

Mexico are through to the knockouts as Group A winners, playing some of their best World Cup football in years, on home soil, in front of their own fans.
