GST ARN Status Check: What It Means, How to Track It, and What to Do at Each Stage
You submitted your GST registration application. The system generated an ARN. And now you are staring at it, wondering what is actually happening on the other side.
This guide covers everything about checking your GST ARN status what each status message means in plain language, how long each stage realistically takes, and what action (if any) you need to take. No fluff, no filler.
What Is a GST ARN Number?
When you submit a GST registration application on gst.gov.in, the portal immediately generates a unique code called the Application Reference Number or ARN. It lands in your email and on your registered mobile number within about 15 minutes.
This ARN is your only tool for tracking the application until a GSTIN is issued. Vendors, clients, and government departments accept it as temporary proof that your registration is in process. So knowing where your application stands is not just curiosity it directly affects how you do business.
What Does the ARN Look Like?
The ARN is always 15 characters long a mix of letters and numbers. The first two letters indicate the application type (for example, "AA" for new registration, "AF" for enrolment). The next two digits are your state code. The following four characters encode the month and year. The remaining seven are a unique identifier ending with a check digit.
Every ARN is unique and cannot be duplicated.
One important thing to know: your ARN is valid for 90 days from the date it was generated. In normal circumstances, processing wraps up well within that window. If it does not say there is a serious backlog or a jurisdictional issue do not re-apply without contacting the GST helpdesk first. Duplicate applications cause more problems than they solve.
How to Check GST ARN Status Online
There are three ways to track your application.
Option 1 Third-Party Free Tools (Fastest, No Captcha)
Tools like LegalDev's GST ARN status checker pull real-time data from the GST portal and display your status in seconds. No login, no captcha, no fee. Works on mobile browsers too useful if you are checking on the go.
Option 2 Official GST Portal (Without Login)
Go to gst.gov.in → Services → Registration → Track Application Status. Select "Registration" from the Module dropdown, enter your ARN, type the captcha, and click Search. The result is the same data as any other tool it just takes a few extra steps each time because of the captcha.
Option 3 Official GST Portal (After Login)
This is the better choice if you are managing multiple applications a new registration, an amendment, a cancellation, or a refund all at the same time. After logging in, go to Services → Track Application Status and you can search by ARN, by SRN, or by submission date. Everything is in one place.
All 9 GST ARN Status Types What Each One Actually Means
When you check your ARN status, you will see one of these nine messages. Here is what each means in practice.
1. Pending for Processing
Your application is in the queue. A tax officer has not yet reviewed it.
This is the first status you will see and it is entirely normal. With Aadhaar OTP verification done, most applications move out of this stage in 3 to 7 working days. Without Aadhaar verification, it can take up to 30 working days because physical verification may be required.
If you have been sitting at this status for more than 10 working days and Aadhaar verification was completed, it is worth contacting the GST helpdesk.
2. Pending for Clarification ⚠️
This is the status that needs your immediate attention.
The officer reviewed your application and found something unclear or missing. A formal notice has gone to your registered email and mobile number. You have 7 working days from the date the notice was issued not from when you happen to read it to log in and respond.
Missing this deadline almost always results in rejection.
What to do:
- Log in to gst.gov.in
- Go to Services → Registration → Application for Filing Clarifications
- Enter your ARN and open the officer's query
- Read every point carefully and prepare your reply with supporting documents
- Submit
After submission, your status will update to "Clarification Filed – Pending for Order."
If you are not sure how to respond to the officer's notice especially if it involves address proof, business proof, or partner details get a CA or GST consultant involved before the deadline. The cost of that advice is far less than the delay caused by a rejection.
3. Clarification Filed – Pending for Order
You submitted your reply. The officer is reviewing it and will issue a final approval or rejection order.
No action needed. This usually resolves within 7 working days. Keep checking your status regularly so you catch the decision quickly.
4. Clarification Not Filed – Pending for Order
The 7-day window to respond to the officer's notice closed without any response from your side. The officer will now proceed to issue a rejection order.
If you see this when you check your status, contact the GST helpdesk or your jurisdictional officer immediately. There may still be a very narrow window before the order is passed. But it is narrow.
5. Site Verification Assigned
A physical inspection has been ordered. An officer will visit the business address you declared in the application.
This happens when address proof documents are insufficient or when the officer wants to confirm the premises match what was described. Make sure your business premises are accessible, signage is in place, and all original documents are ready when the inspector arrives.
6. Site Verification Completed
The inspector submitted their report. The application is back with the main officer for a final decision. Nothing more is required from you just wait and keep tracking.
7. Approved
Your GSTIN has been issued.
The registration certificate (Form REG-06) is available on the portal under Services → User Services → View/Download Certificates. Once you have this, you can start putting your GSTIN on invoices, filing GST returns, and claiming input tax credit.
8. Rejected
The officer denied the application. This can happen because of document issues, an address mismatch, a missed clarification deadline, or other grounds. The rejection order will state the exact reason.
You will need to file a fresh application with those issues corrected. Do not rush it fix every problem the rejection order mentions. A second rejection adds significant delays.
9. Withdrawn
You voluntarily withdrew the application before any order was issued. No penalty applies, and you can re-apply whenever you are ready with correct information.
ARN Status for Different Application Types
Most people track ARNs for new registrations, but the same system applies to:
- Amendment ARNs when you change core registration details like business name, principal address, or directors
- Cancellation ARNs when you file for voluntary cancellation of your GST registration
- Refund ARNs when you claim a GST refund for excess tax paid, ITC on zero-rated supplies, or an inverted duty structure
Each of these generates its own ARN and follows the same status sequence. Refund ARNs are worth watching particularly closely since refund processing has strict timelines and delays in catching notices can cost you.
Realistic Timeline How Long Does Each Stage Take?
| Stage |
Expected Duration |
| ARN generation after submission |
Within 15 minutes |
| Pending for Processing (with Aadhaar OTP) |
3–7 working days |
| Pending for Processing (without Aadhaar) |
Up to 30 working days |
| Clarification response deadline |
7 working days (hard deadline) |
| Clarification Filed → Final order |
~7 working days |
| Site Verification → Report submission |
15–30 working days |
| Full process, no complications |
7–15 working days |
| Full process, with site verification |
30–60 working days |
If your application is past these windows without any update, that is when to escalate either through the GST helpdesk (1800-103-4786) or via a professional who can communicate with your jurisdictional officer directly.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
ARN not received after submission
Check spam first. If it is not there, log in to the GST portal and look under My Applications or My Saved Applications. Your ARN will be listed there.
Status shows "Invalid" or "Not Found"
The ARN is case-sensitive all letters must be capitals, no spaces, no hyphens. Also, if the application was submitted very recently (within the last hour), there can be a data sync delay. Wait an hour and try again.
Status stuck on "Pending for Processing" for too long
Beyond 10 working days with Aadhaar OTP completed, contact the helpdesk at 1800-103-4786 or email helpdesk@gst.gov.in with your ARN.
ARN expired (90-day validity passed)
Contact the helpdesk before re-applying. Filing a new application without resolving the old one can create duplicate records that complicate everything further.
Cannot check status on mobile
The official portal can be clunky on phones. Third-party tools with mobile-optimised pages tend to work better across Chrome, Safari, and Firefox on both Android and iOS.
A Note for Small Businesses and MSMEs
If you are managing this process without a finance team behind you, you are not alone most small businesses go through this the same way. The process is the same regardless of business size, and the tools available (both the official portal and third-party trackers) work for everyone.
The one stage where outside help is actually worth the cost: Pending for Clarification. Responding to an officer's notice with the right documents in the right format is manageable if you have done it before. If you have not, that 7-day deadline moves faster than expected.
Check your status every couple of days. That is really the whole trick catch a status change early and you have time to deal with it. Miss it and you are scrambling.
